Dozens Protest Against American Airlines at Miami International Airport

Protesters demonstrated in Miami

Dozens of protesters demonstrated Wednesday at Miami International Airport, holding up signs that read, “Stop Corporate Greed,” “Is it FAAIR?” and “Employees bailed out AA, AA Sold out Employees.”

American Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection, and workers were protesting the elimination of jobs.

“There’s potential for hundreds of layoffs, and we can’t afford any more layoffs in the community,” Andy Madtes, President of the South Florida AFL-CIO said. “The main concern here is that American Airlines is filing for bankruptcy, but yet, they have billions of dollars in profits.”

Workers at the airport, flight attendants, and employees of the airlines held the raised the signs, but weren’t shouting any chants at AA’s Terminal 3.

Keith Marzan is a flight attendant at the airport and was there to help show support to his co-workers and protest against AA.

“Pensions are on the verge of being jettisoned from our membership and our workers,” he said. “We have a lot of older workers here at American that depends on their pension. We’ve all been here 20 plus years in the hopes of retiring comfortably like everybody else in the U.S.”

"These are challenging times for everyone at American Airlines and we know change is difficult. It’s important to remember every employee group - labor, independent, support staff and management – is affected. These were not easy decisions to make, but they were made out of necessity," said Bruce Hicks, American Airlines spokesman in an email statement.
