Dozens of Manatees Find Warmth From Cold in Florida Canal

Dozens of manatees have found their way into the warm waters of a canal near a power station in Florida.

The Tampa Electric’s Big Bend Power Station takes is in saltwater to cool off one of its units. When the water flows back into Tampa Bay, it’s warm and clean – perfect for manatees trying to escape cold waters.

The canal is a state and federally designated manatee sanctuary and people see the gentle sea creatures from the power plant’s viewing center.

The center is open until mid-April and operates seven days a week, except for major holidays.
