How a Drag Queen's Sewing Class Threads a Community Together

On South Beach, you can find a drag queen almost anywhere.

But on one day of the month, you can find one particular bearded drag queen at Miami Beach's Hotel Gaythering -- and instead of performing, she's teaching.

Miss Latina, ultimately prepared with a measuring tape tattooed along her hand, leads a unique sewing class that offers an alternative to the party lifestyle that Miami Beach is known for.

"I was a little nervous at first," Miss Latina said. "I didn't know if people would be interested and I've had an overwhelming response. Every class I've had so far has been sold out."

And these sewing classes aren't just about needlework, it's about threading the community together.

"Doing projects together and crafts really help build relationships and build communities," Miss Latina said.

For a small price, she provides the materials and equipment. Students learn how to spool, sketch and sew items such as tote bags, fanny packs and even harnesses.

"I've never had an experience like this in Miami where I can take a class like this and really learn a skill," said one student, Chris.

During the day, Miss Latina is a tailor and has a sewing studio, where she teaches people of all ages how to sew.

"Sewing is definitely a therapy, for me, at least," she said. "It is very time consuming, but it requires a lot of concentration and it's very gratifying."

Sewing classes take place every last Tuesday of the month at Hotel Gaythering at 1409 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. Check out the hotel's Facebook page for more information.
