Driver in Crash That Killed 1 Child, Injured 3 Others Did Not Have License: BSO

The driver in a crash that killed a 6-year-old girl and left three other children badly injured, did not have a Florida license, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

That driver has been identified as Shirley Coto, 38, of Deerfield Beach.

The crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday in the area of W. Hillsboro Boulevard and Northwest 2nd Avenue.

BSO says Coto was the driver of a Nissan Altima with four children inside, ages 4 to 11. It appears that at least some of the children were not properly restrained.

Investigators say Coto was heading southbound into the Bazaar Supermarket's parking lot when she collided with a Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by Marcelo Verly, 22, also of Deerfield Beach.

Verly and his passenger were not seriously injured. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue transported Coto and children to Broward Health Medical Center, where the 6-year-old girl died a short time later. One other child is in extremely critical condition, and two others are in serious condition. Coto was treated and released.

No one has been cited in the crash, which is under investigation.
