Duplex Fire Displaces Northwest Miami-Dade Families, Remains Under Investigation

What to Know

  • Crews responded to the duplex located near Northwest 8th Avenue and 101st Street, where a total of nine people were living in two units.

An overnight fire in Northwest Miami-Dade displaced several families and has investigators wondering if it was intentionally set.

Crews responded to the duplex located near Northwest 8th Avenue and 101st Street, where a total of ten people were living in two units. All those inside got out safely and are being helped by the American Red Cross at this time.

The left side of the duplex sustained the most damage and is a total loss, according to investigators, but all residents are not being allowed to move back in at this time.

"I was just going crazy, because I just heard people screaming loud," said Vandyke Michaels, who was able to get out with his one year old son and four others on the right side. "I don’t know what it was until I got outside and saw a whole bunch of flames."

Miami-Dade Fire investigators have turned the case over to police, who are looking into the possibility of arson but have not released additional details at this time.
