Students in two South Florida counties will be getting an earlier start to the upcoming school years if the proposed calendar is approved in the coming days.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Broward County is scheduled to start classes on Wednesday, August 14th of this year – similar to the August 15th start date in 2018 – after starting a week later in the previous two years.
Palm Beach County is set to approve a new calendar next week that would start classes in 2020 on Monday, August 10th – which is the earliest day allowed under state law – while also expanding Thanksgiving break to a full week.
Miami-Dade County will maintain its later date as they are scheduled to hold the first date of classes on August 20th of this year.
Broward’s calendar committee chair Eric Chisem told the paper they prefer starting classes in the middle of the week to allow students the chance to transition into the school year before the first full week of classes, adding they must work to have 90 class days in the semester that already has closures for Labor Day, Jewish holidays, Election Day and more.
The state in 2015 overturned a previous measure that had prevented classes from opening earlier than two weeks before Labor Day.
