Economy Putting 5 Broward Horses Out to Pasture

"Surplus" equines get early retirement to cut costs

Five Broward County horses may be put out to pasture thanks to the lousy economy.

Mary Muffin, Star, Candy, Missy and Hokey Pokey, all older residents of Tradewinds Park with health problems, have been declared "surplus" and could be out of a job Tuesday.

But no worries, the horses aren't heading to the glue factory.

The county commission will vote on a proposal that would put the horses into an adoption program and would save the county about $17,000 a year.

The county-run recreation area offers park goers the opportunity to ride horses through trails on its approximately 627 acres.

A couple dozen horses will stay on at Tradewinds, authorities said.
