Elderly Man Beaten, Robbed in Home Invasion

Group of violent thieves target 79-year-old in Coconut Grove

Miami Police are looking for a group of violent thieves who robbed and beat and elderly man inside his Coconut Grove home early Wednesday.

The 79-year-old man was alone at his home in the 1800 block of Bayshore Drive when he went downstairs sometime around midnight and found four men in ski masks, Miami Police spokeswoman Keandra Simmons said.

The four men tied up, duct taped and beat the homeowner, then  spent several hours ransacking the home before finally leaving around 5 a.m., Simmons said.

The men made off with gold jewelry and other valuables.

Somehow the elderly man was able to make his way outside his home, where a husband and wife who were jogging in the area found him tied up and called police around 6:15 a.m.

"We heard a gentleman moaning, we were jogging by...we saw that he was tied up and bleeding," said Ruben Garcia, who said he helped the man back into his home. "Obviously the gentleman needed help...he was really uncomfortable out there with his face beat up and tied up."

The elderly man suffered injuries to his head and face. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

Anyone with information of the incident is asked to call Miami-Dade CrimeStoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
