Elderly Newlywed Accused of Trying to Kill Wife

A 79-year-old Hallandale Beach man faces a charge of attempted murder after he allegedly fired a shot and pistol-whipped his wife of just eight months.

According to Hallandale Beach Police, the woman was sleeping when Luis Ames, 79, woke her up and accused her of stealing his checkbook. Police said Ames then grabbed a gun from a dresser drawer and pistol-whipped the woman while shouting, “I’m going to kill you.”

Police said the hit left a large laceration on the woman’s head and she ran out of the apartment with Ames behind her. In a hallway, police said Ames asked his new wife “Where are you going?”

The victim said she turned around and saw Ames pointing a firearm at her and fired the gun. Police said they found a small, bullet size hole in the ceiling of the area where the incident happened.

Hallandale Beach Police said the woman ran from the building and called police. Ames was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
