Elderly Woman Dies in Car in Canal in Broward County

A 93-year-old Tamarac woman died after her car plunged into a Tamarac canal near 55th Lane and Bailey Road Tuesday evening.

The car ended up completely submerged and had to be lifted up by a tow truck. A passerby called 911 as he saw the car plunge into the lake. Lauderhill Fire Rescue arrived and dove into help by breaking one of the windows of the car and pulling the woman from the car, but she didn’t survive the accident.

BSO later identified the woman as Lillian Sornik, 93.

Neighbors in the nearby Village at Woodland said a guardrail wraps around a large portion of the canal to prevent this type of accident. Authorities said the woman’s car went into the canal in a narrow uncovered area.

BSO said the car was driving east on Bailey Road and may have rolled along the rail until it ended up inside the water. The accident remains under investigation.
