Evidence, Inmate Seals Fate of Felon

A felon is in prison again for a crime he committed in 2004.

More than five years ago, a man was shot while sitting in his car with his girlfriend. Last week, Broward Sheriff's Office made an arrest.

The arrest of Ismael Soto McCall, 24, came after a tip from an South Carolina Inmate and forensic evidence obtained by BSO.

On the night of November 11, 2004, 38-year-old Renalto Obas was in his car with his girlfriend at the 1500 Block of Northwest 3 Avenue in Pompano Beach when a masked man opened the driver's side door and shot Obas in the chest.

Obas' girlfriend ran to the driver's side and drove to his sister's house just blocks away. Obas died surrounded by his family and paramedics while they tried to save his life.

On February 23, BSO detectives traveled to a South Carolina prison where an old friend of McCall's was interviewed.

The inmate told detectives he let McCall borrow his .25-caliber gun to commit a robbery. McCall later told him that he botched the robbery and shot a man in the process. The statement along with McCall's fingerprint on the car lead to his arrest.

McCall is now charged with first-degree murder.

It's not the suspect's first contact with the law. McCall has been arrested for possession of cocaine, aggravated battery and grand theft.
