Ex-Senator: Donald Trump ‘Less Than Honest' About Florida Casinos

Donald Trump is being accused of not telling the truth when he was asked about lobbying for casino gambling in Florida by former Gov. Jeb Bush during Wednesday night's debate.

Former state Sen. Dan Gelber, who served while Bush was governor, told NBC 6 Trump clearly lobbied for big casinos in South Florida.

"I don't like calling people liars but I think he was less than honest to say he was not trying to establish a casino foothold in Florida, especially here in Miami," Gelber said.

The exchange was one of the feistier moments during the debate.

"You wanted it and you did not get it because I was opposed to casino gambling before, during and after, and that's not, I'm not going to be bought by anybody," Bush said.

"I promise if I wanted it I would have gotten it," Trump responded.

The Trump campaign said Thursday that he never directly asked Bush to back a casino.

While Bush's spirited exchanges with Trump were entertaining, Florida International University Professor Eduardo Gamarra thought Miami's other local favorite, Sen. Marco Rubio, dominated the stage when it came to matters of foreign policy, despite limited time for explanations.

"Because of the format, because you need to have these one liners that stick, I don't think that it's a format that really works well, even for Mr. Rubio," Gamarra said.
