Explosive Scare at Fort Lauderdale School

Vial found in science lab forced evacuation of school

A Fort Lauderdale school was evacuated and a bomb squad team brought in after a science teacher discovered a potentially explosive chemical in a classroom Friday morning, fire officials said.

The incident happened at the Bethany Christian School on Southeast 9th Street, after the teacher came across the vial which contained a form of nitrate that can be explosive when it crystallizes, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue officials.

The school, which had no students, was evacuated while the vial was taken out of the science lab. Officials said the vial may have been sitting around for two to three years.

The vial would be properly disposed of, officials said.

Several streets in the area of the school were closed off during the incident.
