FDLE Investigates After Man Dies in Monroe County Sheriff's Office Custody

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a man died in the custody of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, officials said.

Clifford Green, 39, was driving northbound on U.S. 1 at the 98.5 mile marker Wednesday when he was pulled over by Det. Iscandel Perez for having what appeared to be illegal tint on his windows, sheriff's office officials said.

A check of Green's license revealed it was suspended, and he was taken into custody, officials said.

Green appeared to be having medical issues as he was being taken to jail in the patrol vehicle of Deputy Thomas Hill, officials said.

Hill pulled over and called for medical assistance and rendered aid to Green until paramedics arrived a short time later, officials said. Paramedics took Green to Mariner's Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay requested the response of FDLE, which will investigate the death.
