Plane Makes Emergency Landing on 595 in Davie: FHP

The pilot of a small aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on 595 in Davie Thursday morning, Florida Highway Patrol confirmed.

Pilot Scott Richmond of Michigan told NBC 6 that he was flying from South Carolina headed to Fort Lauderdale International Airport when the tower told him he couldn't land because a jet needed to land first.

After circling the plane around for some time, Richmond began running out of fuel and told the tower he was going to have to make an emergency landing.

Richmond said he did his best to make sure the cars on nearby 595 westbound could clearly see him before he made the emergency landing at Flamingo Road and 136th Avenue, telling NBC 6 he "said his prayers" and took a chance.

The plane clipped one car, but no one was injured. The car sustained minor damage to its roof and right side. The driver is from Weston.

Davie Police were diverting all traffic from 595 westbound to exit onto State Road 84, as all lanes of 595 were closed beyond Nob Hill Rd.

The lanes have since been reopened and the plane has been towed from the runway, but drivers can still expect some residual delays.

An investigation is underway.

The aircraft was a 1963 Piper PA-24 Comanche.
