FIU Football to Face Toledo in 2018 Bahamas Bowl

What to Know

  • The Panthers announced they have accepted a bid to play in the Bahamas Bowl on Friday, December 21st when they will face the Toledo Rockets.

The FIU Panthers will get a chance to set a program record for wins in a season when they head to a bowl game for just the fourth time ever – and this one could be a true day in paradise for head coach Butch Davis’ team.

On social media late Sunday, the Panthers announced they have accepted a bid to play in the Bahamas Bowl on Friday, December 21st when they will face the Toledo Rockets at 12:30 p.m inside Nassau's Thomas Robinson Stadium.

It will be the second straight year the Panthers have gone bowling after losing to Temple in last season’s Gasparilla Bowl played in St. Petersburg. FIU’s other two bowl game appearances came in 2010 and 2011, when they won the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl over Toledo and lost the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl to Marshall.

At 8-4 on the season, the Panthers saw their hopes of an appearance in the Conference USA title game dashed when a fourth quarter comeback against Marshall fell short last weekend. Still, a win over the Rockets would give FIU the first nine win season in program history.

The Panthers and Rockets have met a total of three times including the bowl game showdown – with FIU winning on the road in 2008 and Toledo returning the favor in Miami the following season.
