The college football bowl season is officially underway – and for the first time in years, the FIU Panthers are joining the postseason fun.

Thursday, the Panthers will play just their third game in the program’s 16 season history when they face the Temple Owls in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl, kicking off at 8 p.m. inside Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

At 8-4 this season, first year head coach Butch Davis led the Panthers to their first winning season since 2011 – when they also had eight wins and played in the same bowl game, then called the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl, where they lost to Marshall.

FIU is led this season by senior quarterback Alex McGough, who has thrown for almost 2800 yards and 17 touchdowns this season while improving his NFL Draft stock. The Panthers finished second in the Conference USA East Divison, their best finish since joining the league three seasons ago.

All-time, FIU is 1-1 in bowl games – including a win in the 2010 Little Caesars Bowl with a game winning kick as time expired.
