FIU Students Learning Life Saving Techniques in New Program Created After Choking Death of Graduate

After a FIU employee died from choking, her family and the school are coming together to make sure students and staff all learn how to perform a lifesaving skill - CPR.

The FIU heart program led its first training session, with 150 hospitality students learning how to perform the technique, use an AED and master choking relief skills.

This all comes in memory of Analise Dlugasch, a graduate and employee who choked while having dinner at a restaurant and, due to complications, later passed away.

Analise's parents donated funds to start a memorial endowment in her honor, and even the American Heart Association helped make this new training possible by donating 1,000 CPR kits.

"We talk a lot about first responders and you think police officers and fire rescue,” said her parents, Phillip and Lucie Dlugasch. “But really, everyone should be a first responder."

The FIU heart program will first focus on training Hospitality and Management students, but then they plan on expanding it to the rest of the campus and even the hospitality industry in South Florida.
