Family, Pets Saved From Burning Home

Broward Sheriff's Office deputy rushed into a burning building to save a family and their pets

A family of six escaped their burning home this morning in North Lauderdale when fire broke out in the laundry room

Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue received a 911 call regarding the hot water heater explosion inside 8220 SW 8th Street just before 10 a.m. Wednesday. Deputy Larry Jenkins, who was the first to arrive at the home, noticed a small fire in the laundry room.

"I tried to put out the fire with my small extinguisher, but the fire was quickly spreading," Jenkins said.

Jenkins said his priority was to get the family out of the house. The fire spread throughout the laundry room and reached the roof, fire officials said.

The flames were visible from down the street.

Basil Singh, his wife, and other family members were able to escape unharmed, authorities said.

Their beloved pets, seven birds and two dogs, also made it out of the burning home.

The Singh family has lived at the home for the last nine years. They will be staying with a relative who lives across the street.

The house is a total loss, authorities said.
