Family of Grocery Store Beating Victim Say He's Showing No Improvement

The family of a man who was left in a coma after being attacked inside a Miami Beach grocery store said he is showing “no improvement” days after the attack.

Mohammad Hussein was waiting to check out at the M&L Market on Collins Avenue when the attack happened. He allegedly called out another shopper for using the express line with too many groceries in his basket. That’s when Miami Beach Police said Roger Perry, 53, backhanded Hussain, who fell backwards and hit his head on the ground, fracturing his skull.

“Unfortunately, there’s no improvement at the moment. It’s quite critical,” Hussein’s brother-in-law Rayan Uddin said Friday. “We’ll find out in the next few days, because it doesn’t sound good.”

Police said Hussein was knocked out before he even hit the ground, and when his head hit the ground, it whipped back with such intensity that blood immediately began to pool around where he was lying. Hussein has been in a coma since the attack.

Hussein’s family has arrived from around the country and has also traveled to Miami from England. His neighbors are also saddened by the attack.

“I pray for him, because I like him,” said Yara Suarez, a neighbor of Hussein.

Perry was identified via the store’s surveillance video and through photographic lineups shown to witnesses. When he was arrested Thursday night, Miami Beach Police said he waived his rights to an attorney and gave a sworn statement admitting to the attack.

In court Friday, Perry asked the bond court judge if he could be transferred to the hospital instead of being held in jail.

“I have spinal stenosis in three or four or five, and I have bipolar disorder and uh, post-traumatic stress disorder,” Perry told the judge.

Hussein’s family just wants justice for the attack.

“Hopefully, he gets the right punishment for his crime, that he deserves,” Uddin said.
