Family of Man Fatally Shot By BSO Demands Transparency

A community rally was held in Pompano Beach Monday night to discuss the fatal shooting of a 56-year-old man by Broward Sheriff's deputies.

Family, friends and supporters packed the Bethel A.M.E Church off 3rd Avenue to demand justice for Gregory Frazier.

They addressed a panel of attorneys, representatives and Sheriff Scott Israel asking for the need of trust and transparency.

"I never knew my father would become part of this pattern of a horrible trend across this country -- to shoot first, ask questions later," said Xavier Frazier, Gregory Frazier's son.

Xavier told the crowd he's struggling to explain his father's shooting death.

BSO deputies responded to the scene off Northwest 14th Street Friday night following a call from Deborah Frazier, who said she had been in a fight with her brother.

When deputies arrived, they said Frazier was holding a knife while sitting on the porch outside the home. They would eventually open fire and Frazier would be pronounced dead at the scene.

"The police did not help the situation. They took my father," said Xavier.

NBC 6 obtained 911 calls of the moments leading up to the deadly night from a panicked sister.

At the community meeting, Sheriff Israel said neither of the two deputies involved were wearing a body camera.

Israel said this community can expect change.

"Every member of our agency within the next six months to a year will be wearing body cameras. I will be signing a memo of understanding that all deputy-related shootings from this point forward will be investigated by the FDLE," said Sheriff Israel.

BSO is asking the community for peace and calm as they join together to get the facts on this case.

The Broward County State Attorney Michael Satz promised transparency. "I am going to ask for an outside prosecutor to review the investigation," said Satz.

Civil Rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing members of the Frazier family, said the family hopes eyewitness evidence can demonstrate whether the deadly force was actually required.
