Family of Man Killed at Liberty City Apartment Complex Gets $1.45M Settlement

The family of a man who was a shot and killed at a Liberty City apartment complex has received a $1.45 million settlement from the complex's owner, their attorneys said.

Jamaal Martin, 25, was shot and killed last April outside his front door at the complex at 7104 Northwest 14th Place. His family and their attorney said it might not have happened if the property owners had provided even the most basic security measures.

"They didn't have any lights, they had no gates, they had no security in any form whatsoever despite a very long history of crime in the apartment complex and the surrounding area," attorney Pedro Echarte said Thursday.

NBC 6 reached out to Tzadik Properties, the owner of the complex, but hasn't heard back.

Echarte sued the owner last year for another murder at the same complex. Another settlement was reached, that one for $2.4 million.

"You would think they would put in some sort of security measures after that first case to protect their tenants and guests and they did absolutely nothing," Echarte said.

Echarte said by common law standards, landlords are obligated to provide some security measures. In Martin's case, he leaves behind an 8-year-old son.

"This was a good result for our client," he said. "The sole survivor was his son, who will have to forever live without his father."

No arrests have been made in Martin's shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
