Family of Man Killed in Miami Gardens PD-Involved Shooting Start Charity

Lala’s House will raise awareness and money for programs to educate police officers on the best practices for dealing with situations involving the mentally ill.

The family of a mentally ill man killed in a police-involved shooting by Miami Gardens Police plan to start a new charity in his name to help raise awareness and money to better equip officers to deal with mentally ill people.

Lala's House, Inc. is a 501c3 charity that lists Catherine Daniels, the mother of Lavall Hall, as a director, along with Melissa Edwards and Judd Rosen.

The goal of Lala's House, Inc. is to increase awareness and raise the funds necessary to help educate and prepare officers with best practices when dealing with situations involving the mentally ill.

Daniels' son Lavall was shot and killed by Miami Gardens Police officers in February after she called 911 for help with her schizophrenic son. Former police chief Stephen Johnson said the officer opened fire after Hall attacked two officers with a broomstick.

Hall's family has already filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Miami Gardens and the police department.

On Wednesday, attorneys for the family released chilling dash camera video of a portion of that night. In it, Daniels is heard pleading with officers "please, don't hurt my child, please" just before the fatal encounter.

Glen Goldberg, the family's attorney, said the police dash camera video of the shooting, which was obtained by the family, contradicts the police narrative.

"It is a bombshell, it does not corroborate what the City of Miami Gardens police chief had said," Goldberg said.

Lavall Hall's family is also calling on Miami Gardens Police to release additional dash cam recordings from the night Hall was killed.
