Fatal Davie CVS Shooting Was Craigslist Transaction Gone Wrong: Cops

Police say a Craigslist transaction for an iPhone led to Wednesday's fatal shooting inside a Davie CVS store.

The deadly trip to the drugstore happened at the CVS on University Drive near Griffin Road Wednesday afternoon, when things got heated between 20-year-old Andre Smith and 38-year-old Matthew Barry, Davie Police said.

Smith was selling an iPhone 7 on Craigslist and met Barry in the parking lot to sell the device.

But after money was exchanged, there was an argument as Barry claimed Smith and his friend were trying to take off with the phone and the cash.

"Barry felt uncomfortable. He felt like they were going to rob him," Davie Police Maj. Dale Engle told reporters Thursday. "Mr. Barry attempted to leave in his vehicle but was blocked by Mr. Smith and his acquaintance."

Police say Barry ran into the CVS, frantically telling employees to call 911, as surveillance video showed Smith and his friend follow him into the store.

According to police, Barry indicated to Smith and his friend that he has a concealed weapons permit and that he was carrying a weapon, but that Smith and the friend replied that they also had a weapon.

"Surveillance video also shows Smith pursuing Barry around different displays at the front of the store," Engle said. "Mr. Barry is able to separate himself and push Smith away from him, physically push him away, and he’s able to retrieve a gun that he has on him and he fires several rounds striking Smith."

Smith was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Records show the Pembroke Pines resident had a criminal history including charges for domestic violence and misdemeanors.

Police said no charges have been filed but the shooting remains under investigation.
