Fire Alarms Traumatize Some Stoneman Douglas Students, Upset Parents

For the fifth time in less than a month, fire alarms went off at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wednesday morning leaving some students traumatized and parents upset.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said a school board fire alarm technician confirmed that Wednesday's alarm issues at the Parkland school were caused by a "system malfunction." The defective component has been replaced, they said.

Earlier, officials tweeted that the school was reviewing camera footage to see of the alarm was deliberately set off.

Kim Zeltwanger said her daughter, a sophomore at the school, had a panic attack when the alarms starting going off and went to the bathroom to call her.

"She texted me five minutes later saying it was going off again and 10 minutes after that it went off a third time," Zeltwanger said. "I was on the phone with her for a half hour cause she was having a panic attack."

Last month, on the second day back to classes, a student pulled a fire alarm at the school, causing trauma for many students including some who lived through the Feb. 14 mass shooting at MSD that left 17 people dead. Other alarm issues were reported on August 30 and 31, and Sept. 11.

"It's horrible, it makes me so sad because the school is supposed to be safe for them to go to and every day this happens, it seems like every day it's something," Zeltwanger said. "I can't keep saying 'it's going to be ok, it's going to be ok honey, it'll get better,' because it doesn't, it's not getting better."
