Fire Guts Home in SW Miami-Dade County

A massive fire gutted a home in Southwest Miami-Dade County Friday evening and sent one person to the hospital with burns.

The fire happened at a home on the 12500 block of SW 264th Street in Miami-Dade County. Norma Romero and her family lived at the home and said they lost everything in the fire.

“Norma realized that her son was still in the room, so she tried to get him out,” said Ambar Escribano, Romero’s daughter-in-law. “Her husband went in, that’s how he got burned.”

The house was completely engulfed in flames in seconds and the entire home ended up being destroyed by the fire. A total of four others were in the house with Norma when the fire started.

“They were trying to fight the blaze with the water hose,” said William Perez, Norma’s son. “They couldn’t and it took about 15 to 20 minutes for the firefighters to get here, when they got here, the house was already gone.”

Norma’s husband was taken to Homestead Baptist Hospital with minor burns and the family said he should be released later tonight.

“God gave us the best gift, everybody is alive,” Perez said. “The house can be repaired or replaced.”

The Red Cross is assisting the family in the aftermath of the fire.
