Authorities are investigating a fire that swept through a popular Miami restaurant early Tuesday morning.

Firefighters responded to El Palacio De Los Jugos at 5741 West Flagler Street just after 3 a.m. after receiving reports of heavy black smoke showing from the Roof, Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll said.

The firefighters found a 2-story building, separate from the restaurant dining area, locked up with smoke pouring from the roof vents, Carroll said. The doors to the building were forced open and fire crews quickly extinguished the fire.

The building serves as a large kitchen and food storage for the restaurant. The owner said it had closed at 9 p.m. Monday and was expected to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, with a cleaning crew the only occupants between those hours, Carroll said. No one was injured.

It appears the fire started near the deep fryer and stove appliances, Carroll said. A Miami Fire Rescue investigator was working to determine the exact cause.
