Firefighters Battle Blaze, Dodge Bullets at North Miami Building

Officials say no one injured after tenant opens fire on firefighter

A resident of a North Miami apartment building opened fire on a firefighter who responded to a blaze Wednesday morning after he likely thought someone was trying to break in.

Miami-Dade firefighters responded to the complex at 13390 Northeast 7th Avenue where they encountered a fire in the laundry room, officials said.

As they were batting the blaze, some firefighters went through the building to make sure everyone got out safely. When they got to an apartment on the fourth floor, a tenant fired a gunshot at his door, officials said.

"They told us to get out of the building so we all got out of the building," said Elmer Bailey, a resident who lives on the fourth floor and tried to get his neighbor out. "I tried to talk to him about it, but he didn't want to open the door."

No one was hurt in the fire, or the gunfire. It's unknown if the man will face charges for firing the gun.
