Young Child Killed in Lauderhill Apartment Fire

A young child has died after firefighters responded to an apartment fire in Lauderhill Monday morning.

The fire was reported on the second floor of the building at 2031 Northwest 59th Way. When firefighters responded, the second story was fully engulfed in flames, officials said.

Two brothers, 9-year-old Justin Isme and 8-year-old Jayden Isme, were upstairs. Justin was able to jump to safety and find a neighbor who called 911.

But Jayden, the other brother, became trapped inside and his body was later found by firefighters, officials said.

β€œThe brother that was in the bedroom with him did not make it out," Lauderhill Police spokesman Lt. Mike Butkus said.

Police confirmed the children had been left home alone, but it is still unclear why.

"It's sad, it's a tragedy," said Mike Florent, who lives next door.

Officials said the flames were so out of control that at one point, firefighters had no choice but to sit back, unable to help.

"The intensity of the fire was so great that they had to back out and the ceiling was collapsing down on them," Butkus said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
