Firefighter's Dash Cam Captures Crash Flames

Dump truck crash sends one man to the hospital

A driver is lucky to be alive after his van erupted in flames after colliding with a dump truck on the turnpike in Lauderhill.

Fire officials say the 56-year-old man is expected to be okay after slamming into the back of a dump truck full of asphalt around 1:45 a.m. a quarter-mile north of Sunrise Boulevard on the northbound side of the turnpike.

The crash ignited a fireball that Fire Captain Jeff Levy caught on his dash cam.

"After the impact, it appears that the van that the driver was driving burst into flames, igniting, fully engulfing the van extending into the dump truck," said Levy. "The driver was able to get out on his own, doesn't remember or recall what exactly happened. He was transported to Broward General with serious injuries."

Rescuers say he suffered serious face, chest, and leg injuries. No one else was seriously hurt.

Levy said the crash happened near a construction zone where crews are repaving the turnpike.

He pointed out all lanes were clear at the time of the crash. The crash shut down traffic for nearly two hours.
