First Crystal Lagoon in Country Comes to Florida

A massive, crystal-blue lagoon was unveiled in Florida on Thursday, the first man-made lagoon of its kind in the United States.

The 7.5 acre lagoon is filled to the brim with glimmering water and is 8-to-10 feet deep, according to a spokesperson from Metro Development Group, the company building the Crystal Lagoon in Tampa. The lagoon will be situated in the community of Epperson in Pasco County.

Although it was revealed during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, the lagoon will officially open in spring 2018, according to a news release. Swimmers can expect to see a waterslide, private cabanas, tidal pool, family beach, yoga lawn and other luxurious amenities surrounding the lagoon.

The man-made body of water is touted as a unique, one-of-a-kind feature at the Epperson home development in Wesley Chapel. Homes in the community begin at $326,990.

“Imagine snorkeling or paddle boarding across a seven acre, crystal clear blue lagoon,” the Epperson website reads. “Now imagine this is in your own backyard. Welcome to Epperson."

Similar lagoon-communities are slated for construction in other cities around Florida. Two will be in Pasco County, one in southern Hillsborough County, one in Lee County and one in Polk County, according to the website.

While the lagoons are primarily for residents living in the respective communities, there will be some guess access, a spokesperson said. No further details were immediately available.

Crystal Lagoons have been built in locations like Dubai, South Africa and Egypt -- the latter winning a Guinness World Record for the largest man-made lagoon in the world (25 acres.)

Metro Development Group started working with the Crystal Lagoon amenity in 2015.
