Fleet Week 2015 Sails Into Port Everglades

Fleet Week 2015 is officially underway in South Florida.

Starting Sunday and going all the way through May 10th, the 25th annual Fleet Week Port Everglades gives sailors a chance to relax and enjoy themselves, while giving the public a chance to mix and mingle with thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members.

A number of public events are taking place that give the public and opportunity to salute our men and women in uniform.

Ships are set to arrive from 7 a.m. to 10 a. m. Monday morning, followed by an all hands on deck welcoming party at 6 p.m. at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Other events planned later in the week include the Fleet Week Golf Classic, a concert featuring the Navy Band on Wednesday, a military employer recognition breakfast Friday and even an extreme ping pong tournament Saturday in participation with the local Boys and Girls Clubs of South Florida.

Aside from public events, many activities are planned to provide recreation opportunities for the visiting Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen. Those include a blood drive, law enforcement and fire and rescue ride-along's sponsored by the Broward County Sheriff's Office, and an event to honor women in the military.

NBC 6 South Florida had the opportunity to take a tour of the USS Wasp, considered to be the number one warship in all of the U.S. Navy fleet, as well as the opportunity to board the USS New Hampshire submarine, part of a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines in service with the U.S. Navy.

For those who already secured their spot, more than 8,000 students, residents and veterans will also have the opportunity to tour the visiting Navy and Coast Guard ships.

Anyone who was unable to secure a spot in this year's tours is advised to visit BrowardNavyDaysInc.org early next year in order to try again for Fleet Week 2016.

While admittance to most events and activities were secured months ago, a limited number of tickets are still available for Galley Wars, the Iron Chef-style culinary competition taking place on Saturday.

The competition will heat up as it pits teams from each of Fleet Week's visiting ships against one another as they create delicious masterpieces based on a secret ingredient.

The event will be held at Hugh's Culinary in Oakland Park, and tickets can be purchased via eventbrite.com.
