Two Women Trapped in Floor Collapse

Floor caves in at Sunny Isles Beach resort

Two women taking a leisurely stroll through a high-rise building got the scare of their lives yesterday when the floor of the building suddenly caved in below their feet.

The incident happened in the lobby area inside the Marco Polo Beach Resort in Sunny Isles Beach around 5 p.m. Sunday evening, while the mother and daughter were walking back inside from the pool area.

"This was a 15 by 15 foot hole," said Liz Calzadilla-Fiallo, spokesperson for the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department. " They actually fell about seven feet into this hole and had to be rescued by four technical rescue teams."

Property manager Victor Sala said the building is 40 years old and he's never known it to have any problems. "Just last month we received a structural re-certification.  Everything appeared to be fine," he said.

The building at 19201 Collins Ave. is half condo, half hotel.

The two victims were treated for minor injuries at Aventura Hospital, while building Inspectors continue to investigate what led to the floor collapse.
