Florida Corrections Officer Bit Cops During Miami-Dade DUI Arrest: Police

Miya Bell, 27, was arrested Sunday on multiple charges

A Florida corrections officer, accused of attacking officers after she was stopped in Miami-Dade for allegedly driving drunk with two kids in the back of her car, is facing numerous charges.

Miya Bell, 27, was arrested Sunday on charges including three counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, three counts battery on a police officer, three counts resisting an officer with violence, two counts child abuse, one count of DUI, and one count resisting officer without violence, according to an arrest report.

Bell, who the report says lives in Homestead, was arrested following a traffic stop on Southwest 137th Avenue near Southwest 160th Street after she was reportedly driving recklessly and "crashing into things" in a gray Nissan Rogue, the report said.

An officer spotted the car and noticed the driver wasn't staying in a single lane, made several lane changes without signaling and almost caused a crash, the report said.

The officer was able to stop Bell and saw that two young children were sleeping in the back seat, the report said. The officer noticed that Bell had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her breath, had slurred speech and had bloodshot and watery eyes, the report said.

Bell told the officer she was coming from "the club," and she refused to perform field sobriety exercises, the report said.

As she was being taken into custody, Bell refused to walk toward a patrol car, and wrapped her leg around an officer's leg to stop walking, the report said. Throughout the incident, Bell was violent and combative, and kicked at officers, the report said.

Bell bit one officer on the arm, breaking the skin and causing a deep laceration and bleeding, the report said. She headbutted a second officer on the bridge of his nose, causing a laceration, the report said. She bit another officer in the thigh, penetrating his uniform pants and causing bruising, the report said.

Bell was eventually placed in leg restraints and secured in the back of a patrol car. She later refused a breath test, the report said. Two of the injured officers were taken to University of Miami Hospital for treatment.

In bond court Monday, Bell's attorney said she has no criminal record.

"These allegations are quite horrific, especially somebody in a position that you're in," Judge Renatha S. Francis told Bell. "These allegations are just really outrageous, they really are."

Bell was ordered held on $25,000 bond and will be on house arrest if released. She was also ordered to stay away from the children and cannot cannot use, purchase, possess or carry any guns or weapons.
