Florida Grandmother Caught Buying Heroin With Toddler Grandson in Car: Police

What to Know

  • The child was turned over to a family member that arrived at the scene.

A 43-year-old grandmother was arrested outside of a Central Florida store after a deputy saw her buying heroin – with her toddler grandson in the backseat of her car.

NBC affiliate WESH-TV reports that Amy Moreland was arrested Tuesday after Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies stopped her car in DeLand and found what was later determined to be heroin inside of it. Moreland was charged with drug possession as well as child neglect.

Body cam video shows the deputies placing the child and Moreland in a police vehicle, explaining the dangers of fentanyl – a growing danger that can prove lethal in the growing battle against opioids.

"You want to reach out to the parents or the grandparents and say 'What are you doing?' But the problem is the opioids have control of their life," Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood told the station.
