Florida Keys Man Beats Woman With Conch Shell, Throws Her in Canal Before Arrest: Deputies

A woman was taken to the hospital near Key West after telling officials she was hit with a conch shell and thrown into a nearby canal – leading to the arrest of a man who was found asleep inside of a nearby home.

Officers arrested 38-year-old Calvin Tate of Big Coppit Key on Sunday and charged with aggravated battery as well as possession of Xanax without a prescription.

According to an arrest email, the 44-year-old victim was bleeding profusely from her head and had multiple bruises across her body – telling Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies that Teal beat her with the shell and then threw her in a canal before going back inside his home.

Deputies went inside the home and found multiple bloody paper towels and a blood trail leading to the bedroom, where Tate was asleep on his bed. He was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail.

The victim was taken to the Lower Keys Medical Center, where her condition was not released.
