Police say a Florida man threatened to jump off the Sunshine Skyway Bridge after being confronted at his home by officers for allegedly sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12.

NBC affiliate WFLA-TV reported 50-year-old James Humphreys was approached by officers at his home in Pinellas Park after he allegedly performed a sex act on the child inside his home as several other children were sleeping inside the home.

According to police, Humphreys sped off in his car and drove to the bridge – a site notorious for people committing suicide by jumping from it – before calling relatives and saying he was going to end his life.

An officer who is also a trained crisis counselor was able to talk Humphreys away from the edge of the bridge and he was taken into custody, where he is scheduled for his first court appearance Thursday.

Officers say they believe there may be more victims and are asking anyone whose children at contact with Humphreys to call police.
