Florida Promises to Reimburse Motorists After SunPass Toll Troubles

Florida will reimburse motorists charged bank fees after a major malfunction by the company that manages the SunPass toll system led to their accounts being overdrawn.

Millions of toll transactions statewide got delayed as a result of a billing system upgrade. Some customers incurred bank overdraft fees when they were finally processed. The backlog was finally cleared earlier this week.

The Department of Transportation announced Thursday that customers could start asking for reimbursements for overdraft fees. DOT officials said the company that botched the upgrade would be billed.

DOT's announcement came the same day that members of the Florida Transportation Commission demanded the agency explain why Conduent State and Local Solutions was given a $343 million contract to manage the system.
