Florida Ranked Among Worst for Highway Safety in New Report

A new report ranks Florida among the worst states for highway safety.

The annual report from the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, an alliance of consumer, health and safety groups and insurance companies based in Washington, D.C., gives Florida a "red rating" due to a "lack of basic safety laws."

The safety laws the group recommends include a rear primary enforcement seat belt law, an all-rider motorcycle helmet law, a booster seat law through age 7 and an all-driver text messaging restriction.

The report notes there were 2,494 road fatalities in Florida in 2014 and the annual economic cost for motor vehicles crashes in the states is $10.75 billion.

Eight other states received a red rating in the report.
