Florida Woman Accused of Letting 12-Year-Old Girl Drive Car

7 injured in 3-car wreck caused by 12-year-old driver, police say

A 20-year-old Florida woman was charged after authorities say she let a 12-year-old drive a car and the pre-teen got into a three-vehicle wreck.

Brittney Ashley Powell was given a misdemeanor criminal traffic citation after Tuesday's crash in Port St. Lucie, police said.

Police said Powell told the girl to drive from a home to a gas station, where they stopped for beverages. The crash happened a short time later, as two other girls, ages 7 and 11, were in the back seat.

The 12-year-old was trying to make a turn at an intersection when she crashed into another car, which sent that car barreling into another vehicle, police said. Powell and the 12-year-old weren't wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, police said.

Powell, the 12-year-old and the two girls in the back seat were taken to a local hospital, along with the woman who was driving the second car and her two children, police said. All of the injuries were non-life threatening.

The crash remains under investigation and more charges could be filed, authorities said.
