Foreclosure Turns Into Dream Come True

Federal funds help Miami single mom

34-year-old Tiffany Williams is now a first time homeowner, after winning The City of Miami's single family home award lottery.

“I feel like I won a hundred trillion million dollars, and I thank you so much for making a program for people like me, single parents like me."

Before the ribbon cutting, there was a ceremony celebrating this gift, which was made possible through the neighborhood stabilization program or NSP.

“We received, as a city, $12 million to purchase foreclosed and abandoned properties that are within the city,” explains NSP project director Ann Kashmir.

NSP funds in the City of Miami are helping renovate 115 formerly foreclosed units, build 180 new construction units and demolish 224 unsafe units. This was a one-time giveaway. Other homes and apartments will be rented or sold to income eligible residents.

“If someone asks where the stimulus money is I'll say ask Tiffany,” added Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado. Tiffany’s newly landscaped yard used to be filled with overgrown weeds and trash.

“This is more to me than just having a house. I was raised by a single mother myself who I love so much.” Her mother Catherine will be living with Tiffany and her two young sons.

“The boys have a home now. I’m at ease, you know. Oh my goodness I have to pay no more rent. Oh my goodness!” The 3 bedroom 2 bath home in Little Haiti is new and spacious.

Tiffany is an assistant manager at a Wendy's in Fort Lauderdale. She'll wait until her day off in Thursday to move in.
