Former Bradenton Police Captain Gets Life for Murder

A former Bradenton police captain has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife.

A Manatee County judge sentenced 69-year-old Thomas Fleming on Thursday. He was convicted earlier this month of second-degree murder with a firearm.

Authorities say Fleming shot his wife Claire at their Bradenton home in October 2012. Fleming testified during his trial that he had only intended to commit suicide in front of his wife but then turned the gun on her in a fit of rage.

Fleming's attorney argued Thursday that he was remorseful about his actions and deserved only the minimum 25 years. But the judge decided on the maximum sentence, which is what Fleming's son had asked for.
