In the wake of gun violence that has shocked and saddened communities across South Florida, a youth and young adult forum will take place Thursday in Miami Gardens.

Thursday's "How to Stop the Shootings" forum is the last of four forums sponsored by the Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board, in partnership with elected officials and other advocacy groups.

The goal is to empower community members to take back their neighborhoods by engaging youth to help come up with answers and solutions to gun violence.

Leaders are focusing on four specific zip codes identified as high-crime areas. There are plans for 25 police officers to receive enhanced training to service these communities through leadership and mentoring opportunities.

The forum will also discuss plans to enhance after school programs and create new jobs, giving children and youth an alternative to the streets and gang violence.

Dozens of rallies have been held in recent months calling for an end to gun violence that is plaguing communities throughout South Florida. Many of the shooting victims have been teenagers and children, and many of these crimes remain unsolved.

Most recently, the shooting death of 6-year-old King Carter appeared to galvanize the community, prompting community members and leaders alike to say enough is enough.

The “How to Stop the Shootings” forum is open to the public, and will take place at the Miami Gardens Community Resource Center, located at 16405 Northwest 25th Avenue in Miami Gardens from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.
