Ft. Lauderdale Officer Released from Hospital Nearly 2 Weeks After Shooting

Eleven days after he was shot multiple times at Maguire Hill’s 16 Irish Pub, Detective Mark Shotwell was discharged from the hospital.

Detective Shotwell was injured after trying to intervene in a domestic dispute outside the pub on Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Detective Shotwell exchanged gunfire with the man involved in the domestic dispute, Richard Arruda.

Arruda died at the scene from his wounds. Officer Shotwell was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center. Since then, he’s undergone two operations because of bullets and bullet fragments that were found in his body.

Shotwell’s wife talked to the media Monday and thanked everyone for their well-wishes, while also requesting privacy during her husband’s recovery.

“The one thing I’d like to get across is that we do want to heal. We want to move on,” Camille Shotwell said. “We would like everyone to respect our privacy and we know everyone wishes us well. It’s been overwhelming and we’d like to thank everyone involved.

Because a Fort Lauderdale Detective was involved in the shooting; the Broward Sheriff’s Office has handled the decision.
