Miami Gardens Man Electrocuted Picking Fruit

Merine Jones leaves behind two children

A Miami Gardens resident was electrocuted while picking fruit in a tree outside his home Saturday evening.

Police say 45-year-old Mervine Jones was with a friend at his home on NW 196th Terrace when he received a fatal shock from a power line running through the tree.

"He was in the tree, and I was on the ground," Jones' friend Garfield MacIntosh explained to WSVN. "We were talking, just sharing jokes, talking all along, like we always do. And I said something, and I didn't hear him respond to me. So I looked up, and I [saw] something that looked like water and it looked like smoke for a minute, and I'm like, 'Mervine, what's going on up there?'

"His mouth was just frothing, and he was breathing like he was snoring."

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted Jones to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He leaves behind two children.
