Elderly woman leads police on chase, has drugs in purse

A disoriented elderly woman from Miami with a purse full of cocaine and pills was busted after she took police on a high speed chase down the wrong side of the road.

Police had to throw down spike strips to stop 61-year-old Maria Garcia after she was spotted driving southbound in the northbound lanes of US 1 in Marathon late Saturday night.

Deputies had turned on their lights and sirens when they saw Garcia's car swerving on the road, but the senior speedster kept going.

After the spike strips blew out her tires, police approached the car and found Garcia inside. Police said she seemed disoriented and didn't realize the lights were for her.

When Garcia was taken to nearby Fishermen's Hospital, a nurse checking her out found baggies filled with cocaine and prescription pills that Garcia couldn't prove were hers.

"When asked about the cocaine and pills, she just said, `I don't know,' and wouldn't answer any more questions,'' Monroe County police spokeswoman Becky Herrin told the Miami Herald.

Garcia, charged with several counts of drug possession and fleeing the police, was sitting in a Marathon jail yesterday on $6,000 bond.
