Loved ones gathered Monday night in Hallandale Beach to honor a 12-year-old girl who died after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver, as her mother called for justice.
Shania Jackson died Sunday as a result of the injuries she suffered in the Nov. 18 incident, Hallandale Beach Police said Monday.
According to police, witnesses said Jackson was crossing the road in the 600 block of Foster Road when a car swerved toward her. Jackson was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Jackson was heading towards Foster Park when she was struck – and that's where the community held a vigil Monday night.
"I love my daughter dearly and I wish she was here right now," said Jackson’s mother, Fiona Clarke.
The driver hasn't been found. Police said they are pursuing leads in the case and are requesting assistance from the public.
"Just left my daughter in the street like she was a rodent – like she was scum, like she was a nobody. She’s someone's child—she’s my daughter,” said Clarke, who spent six days by her daughter’s bedside, praying for a miracle, before she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.
Clarke asked that the person responsible turn himself or herself in.
