Gold Bar Heist at Key West Museum

$500,000 bar recovered from 1622 shipwreck swiped by thieves

A gold bar that spent centuries in a shipwreck on the bottom of the sea near Key West is once again missing after it was the target of a pair of thieves who stole it from a museum.

The 74.85-ounce bar, worth about $550,000, was pulled in 1980 from the Spanish galleon Santa Margarita, which went down in 1622. It was on display at the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum for over 20 years.

According to police, it was removed from its glass case Wednesday afternoon by two suspects who were caught on camera. One suspect is described as a white male, about six feet tall with dark hair and a medium build, the other is about 5-feet-6.

The museum is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the return of the bar.
