Golf Fundraiser Held for Son of Miami Beach Police Officer

Golfers hit the greens for a good cause Friday at the Normandy Shores Golf Course. It was another fundraiser for Dwayne Mitchell, the son of a Miami Beach Police officer.

Dwayne suffered brain damage when he had a heart attack and is now recovering at a special facility in Georgia. Doctors diagnosed Dwayne with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. The illness is rare and usually goes undetected.

"I'm here to help support the cause and help support awareness for this wonderful cause. He was a great kid at Braddock and a good Bulldog, very dependable kid," said Eric Lape, Athletic Director at Braddock Senior High School.

Besides his athletic coach, many members of the Miami Beach Police family were playing for the cause. The family's medical bill are mounting, and they say their insurance doesn't cover all the expenses.

"When Dwayne returns home, he's still going to need 24-hour nursing. He's still going to have to do another two to three years of rehab and those medical expenses are going to be pretty big for the family," said Chris Mitchell, Dwayne's father.

Dwayne's mother and grandmother were delighted to see so many people showing up for him.

"Oh so much love, you know, I see so much love, a show of love, it's unbelievable. So I already know that this was in God's plan," said Cora Mitchell, Dwayne's grandmother.

The family hopes the event, including a silent auction, brings much needed funds. The fundraiser was not just for Dwayne but for anyone suffering from the same syndrome.

Meanwhile, Dwayne will get ready to go home by the end of next month.
