Good Samaritans Rescue 3 Dogs From Mobile Home Fire in Oakland Park

A man who lives in an Oakland Park mobile home is counting his blessings. His dogs were rescued after a devastating fire ripped through his home.

With smoke billowing out from the windows and flames shooting from the roof, two workers who were doing repairs across the street, ran in to see if anyone was inside. They ran into the smoke-filled house before firefighters showed up.

"Some lady said that he had three dogs in there, so I went and got my tools. I broke the door in and got out the dogs," Hector Marrero explained.

They freed two of the dogs inside and went back in again to get the third.

"It started getting real dark and there was one dog tied up and that's the one I wanted to get out," Marrero said.

The animals were happy to be reunited with their owner, who was not home at the time. Investigators believe he left a toaster oven on, which sparked the blaze. They're grateful the maintenance workers called 911 when they did.

"Today was a little bit tragic, you know, when you come home and find your place burning. But thank God somebody opened that door up today and saved my dogs," owner Rock Astudillo expressed.

A home destroyed, but an outcome that could've been much worse.

"I'm a pet owner, you know, so I love animals. I had to go get them out, so that's what I did," Marrero said.

Firefighters said they're glad they arrived on the scene when they did, because the winds were so strong Monday, the flames could have jumped to the home next door.
